How to spot fake Pokémon cards? (The ultimate guide)
The popularity of Pokémon cards is greater than ever. Unfortunately, this also means that the market is flooded with fake Pokémon cards. Sometimes they are obviously fake, but in recent years counterfeiters have become so clever that the 'fakes' are almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
Whether you are a passionate collector looking to expand your collection, or a parent who wants to avoid a bad buy at a flea market: this guide will make you an expert at spotting counterfeits. At PRYME TRADING CARDS, we offer a 100% authenticity guarantee, and in this article, we share our secrets with you.
1. The back of the card: The ultimate giveaway
Counterfeiters often spend 95% of their time on the front of the card, making the back the perfect place to start your inspection. Take a card that you are 100% sure is real and place the questionable card right next to it.
- The color details: A real Pokémon card has a deep, rich royal blue color with a lot of contrast and detail in the vortex. Fake cards often have a blurry, faded, or extremely dark blue back where the details in the vortex are blurred.
- The Pokéball logo: Look closely at the Pokéball in the center. On a real card, the transition between the red and white parts is sharp and has a subtle shadow. On fakes, this is flat, messy, or lacks the correct red shade.
2. Feel and bend: The texture and thickness
Your fingers are one of your best SEO tools in the real world. Real cards are printed on premium cardboard made of multiple layers.
- The texture (Ultra Rares): Since the introduction of modern sets, rare cards (such as Full Arts, Secret Rares, and Alternative Arts) have a tactile, fingerprint-like texture on the front. If a modern, rare card is mirror-smooth and only has a cheap shine, it is guaranteed to be fake!
- The flexibility: Real cards are sturdy but flexible. If you bend them very slightly, they spring back immediately. Fake cards often feel like flimsy paper or very hard, stiff plastic.
3. Font, spelling, and energy symbols
Major printing companies like The Pokémon Company International do not make spelling mistakes. Counterfeiters in foreign factories do it all the time.
- The font: This is the most common mistake with fakes. The font for the attacks and the HP (Hit Points) on fake cards is often thinner, thicker, or a completely different font than the original.
- Energy symbols: Look closely at the circles of the energy symbols (such as Fire, Water, or Grass). On fake cards, the symbol inside the circle is often too large, is not neatly centered, or the circle itself is not perfectly round.
4. The notorious 'Vertical Shine' (The Fake Sheen)
This is a specific trick for cards from the *Sword & Shield* and *Scarlet & Violet* era, such as Ultra Rare V or ex cards. A real Ultra Rare card has a diagonal, holographic shine that moves as you tilt the card in the light.
Fake cards, on the other hand, often have a vertical, straight shine that runs from top to bottom across the card. This gives the card a cheap, plastic-like appearance and often blocks the details of the artwork.
5. The ultimate (but risky) test: The tear test
Do you have a card that seems fake according to all the above steps, but you want 100% certainty? Then there is the tear test. Warning: only do this if you were going to throw the card away anyway, because you will ruin the card!
Real Pokémon cards are made by pressing two layers of cardboard together with a razor-thin layer of black or blue ink in between. If you tear a real card in half, you will clearly see this dark line in the tear. Tear a fake card in half? You will only see plain white paper.
