PSA vs. CGC vs. Beckett: What is the difference between these graded cards?

What is the difference between PSA, CGC and Beckett graded cards?

If you are seriously into collecting Trading Card Games (TCG) such as Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! or One Piece, you have undoubtedly come across the term graded cards. Having your most valuable cards assessed and sealed by a professional grading company is more popular than ever.

But which company should you choose? The three biggest players on the market are PSA, CGC and Beckett (BGS). Although they all grade cards on a scale of 1 to 10, there are major differences in reputation, value and appearance. In this article, we will explain the differences in sharp detail, so you can make the best choice for your collection.

1. PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator): The absolute market leader

PSA is the oldest and best-known grading company in the world. If you look at the total market value of Pokémon cards, PSA stands proudly at the top.

  • The Slab (the case): PSA cards are in a relatively thin, lightweight plastic case (slab) with a recognizable red-and-white label.
  • Resale value: A 'PSA 10 GEM MT' (Gem Mint) is the gold standard in the TCG world. Cards with a PSA 10 grade often fetch the highest and most stable price when sold.
  • Grading: PSA is known for being strict, but historically it has been slightly more lenient on 'centering' (whether the image is neatly in the middle of the card) than Beckett.

2. CGC Cards: The king of pop culture and fast service

CGC was already huge in the world of comic books and made the switch to trading cards a few years ago. By now, they are indispensable to the community.

  • The Slab: CGC is known for its crystal-clear slabs. The cases are slightly thicker and sturdier than those of PSA, making the card stand out visually. CGC uses a sleek black-and-white-and-gold label.
  • Grading: Since their recent updates, CGC has adopted a very strict standard. A CGC Pristine 10 (recognizable by the gold label) is extremely rare and indicates that the card is absolutely perfect.
  • Value and popularity: CGC is rapidly gaining popularity in Europe because turnaround times are often shorter and the slabs simply look ultra-modern.

3. Beckett Grading Services (BGS): For the ultimate perfectionist

Beckett (BGS) is a legendary name in the collecting world. Where PSA excels in volume, Beckett excels in prestige for the highest grades.

  • The Slab: Beckett cases are the thickest and heaviest on the market. They feel like a small fortune.
  • Subgrades: Unique to Beckett is the option for subgrades on the label. You see an exact score for Centering, Corners, Edges and Surface.
  • The Black Label 10: If a card scores a 10 on all four subgrades, it receives a BGS Black Label. This is the highest grade in the entire card world and immediately makes a card worth thousands of euros more than a PSA 10. Beckett 9.5s or regular 10s, on the other hand, are sometimes worth just a little bit less than PSA.

Which one should you choose for your TCG collection?

Which company is best depends entirely on your goal:

  1. Do you want maximum resale value and liquidity? Then choose PSA. The market for PSA 10 is the largest.
  2. Do you want a beautiful, sturdy case and fast service? Then CGC is a fantastic choice that looks perfect in your display case.
  3. Do you have a card that is truly flawless and want to hunt for the ultimate top prize? Then try to obtain the highly coveted Black Label from Beckett.
